Have you ever looked at a freestanding stone archway and marveled at the fact that it has maintained its arch? That is because the pressure is put on the Keystone of the arch. As board chair, the pressure is on you. I personally believe this course is absolutely one of the most important things the OACC offers. As the landscape changes, with new management (inexperienced) and new board members (inexperienced) take responsibility for the cooperative, it is VITALLY important the board chairs know their role and how to guide the board. In most instances the board chair is the longest tenured person on the board. Honestly, it really doesn’t matter. The important thing is that the Chair and Vice Chair get an opportunity to “sharpen the saw.” Topics are “Common Challenges for the Board Chair, Board Chair Roles and Responsibilities, Chair’s Role in Overcoming Board Apathy, Expectations from a Manager, and wrap-up with a Roundtable Issues Discussion.  This is for Chairs and Vice Chairs only. I believe if you have a strong board chair – you have a strong board, a strong manager and a strong employee group. Each one of those is integral. The cooperative can only be as strong as the weakest link. Lets fortify the board chair so we can strengthen the other links.
